Challenges and Success

Daniel Sloss, a Scottish comedian, made his international debut just over a year ago when Netflix released his two back-to-back specials, Dark and Jigsaw. It goes without saying that the 29-year-old comic was already well known for his startling and, occasionally, disturbing style to stand-up at important festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe and many others across the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the United States. But his Netflix debut cemented his success in these different scenes and formally made him known to American comedy fans.

Now, with his impending HBO debut, Daniel Sloss: X, he’s set to enter a much wider and more contentious discussion about stand-up comedy, “punching up” versus “punching down,” and other similar themes that have ensnared people like Dave Chappelle and Bill Burr. And he is certainly prepared for it. The majority of American audiences have seen Sloss’s gags about the #MeToo movement and toxic masculinity from his off-Broadway run of X, which also travelled to several other cities earlier this year. But because of HBO, even more people will hear them.

During a recent chat I had with him, Sloss joked that he was going to get fired because of the publicity X’s HBO premiere would undoubtedly bring him. Regardless of if that is the case (and it most likely isn’t), comedy lovers, new viewers, and comedians alike should check in on Saturday to hear what Sloss has to say.
