Carlos Luis Carrasco, nicknamed “Cookie,” is a Venezuelan-American professional baseball pitcher who is currently a free agent. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with the Cleveland Indians in 2009 and has also played for the New York Mets. He was an All-Star in 2019 and a Mid-Season All-Star in 2023.
Carrasco was born on March 21, 1987, in Maracay, Venezuela. He grew up playing baseball with his older brother, Luis Carrasco, who also became a professional pitcher. He attended Maracay High School, where he was a standout pitcher and hitter. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round of the 2006 MLB draft as the 12th overall pick.
Carrasco is married to Karelis Carrasco, whom he met while substituting for an acting teacher at a local theater. They tied their knot on October 30, 2009. They have five children together: Camila Carrasco and four others whose names are not documented. The couple lives in Miami Beach, Florida.
Carrasco signed with the Phillies and made his MLB debut on June 10, 2009, against the Chicago Cubs. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs in his first start. He struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout his tenure with the Phillies, posting a career ERA of 4.04 and a record of 303-107 in 107 games. He was traded to the Cleveland Indians on July 31, 2015, for three prospects.
Carrasco had a breakout season with the Indians in 2016, winning his first All-Star selection and finishing second in the American League Cy Young Award voting behind Corey Kluber. He also led the league in wins (17), complete games (8), shutouts (2), strikeouts per nine innings (10.1), and WHIP (1.03). He signed a four-year contract extension with the Indians worth $36 million before the start of the 2017 season.
Carrasco continued to pitch well for the Indians until he suffered multiple injuries that sidelined him for most of the past two seasons. He underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2019 after tearing his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) while pitching against the Kansas City Royals. He missed most of the rest of that season and all of the following one as he recovered from surgery.
In July 2023, Carrasco returned to action for the Indians after missing more than two years due to injuries. He pitched six innings against the Detroit Tigers on July 29, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six batters. However, he did not pitch again for Cleveland as he became a free agent after his contract expired at season’s end.
Carrasco’s net worth is estimated to be around $15 million as of now. His main source of income is from his baseball career as a pitcher.
