Willis was raised in Detroit, Michigan, and went to Mumford High School there. Jewish parents raised her. Nathan, her father, ran a junkyard. While Willis was a teenager, her mother Rose, an elementary school teacher, passed very abruptly. Willis had a brother named Kent Willis and a sister named Marlen Frost.
Willis grew up loving African music and culture. Willis recalled that as a teen, she enjoyed loitering in front of Motown Records so she could hear the music playing inside the building. She adored her father, but there were occasions when their differences in race made things difficult. He advised her to avoid Black culture in a letter sent before she left for college. I just got the gig to write The Color Purple, she said in her parting remarks to him.
She studied journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She claimed to have joined a sorority before subsequently “marching and demonstrating” in the 1960s as an activist. One of the most popular television theme songs to date, “I’ll Be There for You” served as the Friends sitcom’s theme music. The song was sarcastically referred to as “the whitest song I ever written” by Willis. Willis received an Emmy nomination in 1995 for “I’ll Be There for You.”
She began painting and creating motorised sculptures in the 1980s, and she later worked as an art director on music videos for artists like Debbie Harry and The Cars. She spoke before a House of Representatives subcommittee in 1997 to defend the legal rights of BMI songwriters. She spoke as the opening keynoter at the inaugural Digital World conference in 1992 and offered a presentation on interactive journalism and online self-expression.
